Darren O'Shaughnessy - Coventry City Council, Tues 21st March 2006

Coventry residents are the first in the country to benefit from a new community messaging system called StreetTV.

The City Council has joined forces with the Police, Fire Service, British Transport Police and the Primary Care Trust to launch the pilot system at three locations in the city -- Holyhead Road, Jubilee Crescent and the Butts.

Important messages, such as warning motorists of an accident ahead or showing a picture of a missing person, will be broadcast in colour on the StreetTV screens -- which are electronic notice boards mounted on lampposts - to people entering the city.

Tina Adkins, Coventry City Council officer, and StreetTV Project Manager said: "StreetTV is a great way to quickly get key messages from the Council and emergency services out to local communities and Coventry is the first place in the country to pilot it."

All screens and their selected locations have been through a full safety audit and are provided free of charge to the Council and its partners in the project, by Streetbroadcast. Streetbroadcast will provide 50 minutes of airtime every hour for the project's partners to supply community messages and information promoting local campaigns. The remaining 10 minutes will be used for 30-second advertisements that Streetbroadcast will sell to fund the messaging system.

Tina and Alex Brown Special Projects Manager for the Coventry City Council took a closer look at the giant TV while it publicised the need for School Crossing Patrols.
